Aeration and Overseeding- The Secret to Beautiful Lawn!

 In aeration, Blog

It is hard to believe I am saying this… but we are reaching the end of summer! Our lawns have taken a beating from this hot Minnesota summer. On top of the heat, our lawns endure disease, insects, and added foot traffic. So what does this mean? It’s time for aeration and overseeding.

We suggest aerating your lawn at least once a year but more if you can. Due to the stressors listed above your lawn becomes compacted which keeps water, air, and sunlight away from the roots. Have you ever noticed how lush golf courses are? They aerate their lawns numerous times a year because it is so beneficial.

How does aeration and overseeding work?

Overseeding and aeration are paired together to enhance seed germination. The process provides access to the deeper parts of your soil. The holes created by aeration allow the seeds to sink down into your lawn’s soil and germinate safely from pests, birds, and lawn traffic. Seeding creates new plant growth and subsequent thickening of lawn, preventing weed growth, soil compaction, and thatch buildup. The end product of this process is a beautifully lush and strong lawn.

When is the best time to aerate and overseed?

The time to schedule aeration and overseeding is from late August to October. The cooler temperatures allow new seeds better-growing conditions and time to take hold and germinate before frost hits. Your lawn will wake up happier (and greener) next spring with thick, strong roots.

How do I get started?

A  professional lawn aeration service provider will aerate properly and overseed the entire lawn. If you already have a lawn care plan in place, aeration and overseeding should be a service available to you, if not give Northern Roots Lawn Care a call and we can get you on the right track.
