The 1 3 rule in mowing is only mowing off the top 1/3 of the grass blade.  This is the best way to maintain a healthy, weed free yard.  Always leaving 2/3 of the blade intact promotes deeper roots, helps avoid lawn stress and helps to keep away weeds.
