This question depends on where you live. We are a Minnesota based company and October is not too late to fertilize your MN lawn. The most ideal time to fertilize is from early to mid-October. You want the final application to be done 2 to 3 weeks before the ground freezes.
This fall fertilizer application will be the final treatment of the season. This will feed the lawn into dormancy giving it the nutrients it needs to provide the turf with a strong and healthy root system. This application will assist with helping the turf survive through the long winter months.
At Northern Roots, our basic lawn care program includes…
- Lawn Mowing – Once a week, we’ll glide through your turf, ensuring no more than a third of your leaf blades are removed. With every mow, we’ll trim the edges hugged by grass and get rid of any stray lawn debris that lingers on hard surfaces. These services will be completed with precision and care to ensure your lawn remains picturesque and ready for use.
- Spring Cleanup and Dethach – Spring cleanup and dethatch entails gently dethatching the turf, gathering fallen leaves, clearing debris from all landscaped areas, performing lawn mowing and trimming, and disposing of waste. Additionally, landscape bed maintenance can be tackled during this session.
- Fall Cleanup – Embrace the beauty of autumn with our comprehensive fall cleanup package! The fall cleanup package includes blowing debris and leaves from all landscaped areas, mowing and trimming the turf, and collecting leaves. Typically, we carry out these tasks once in the fall, complete with proper disposal. Additionally, landscape bed maintenance is available during this season.

Fertilizing is one of the most important things you can do for your lawn. Applying the right kind of fertilizer at the correct time of year ensures your grass and soil gets the nutrients it needs to grow properly and maintain that healthy lush green appearance.
By hiring professionals you get the use of their professional grade products, years of experience of providing a proper application, and expertise saving you time and stress. Fertilizing your lawn on your own can cause expensive lawn damage if you don’t know what you are doing or don’t use the right products.

We have worked with hundreds of local properties and will make sure your lawn is growing the way it should. The 1 3 rule in mowing is only mowing off the top 1/3 of the grass blade. This is the best way to maintain a healthy, weed free yard. Always leaving 2/3 of the blade intact promotes deeper roots, helps avoid lawn stress and helps to keep away weeds.

Weed Control Questions
This question depends on where you live. You do not want to spray for weeds too early or too late in the year. However, we are a Minnesota based company and October is not too late to spray for weeds in MN. Between mid-September and late October, it is one of the best times to spray for some weeds, especially perennial broadleaf weeds. When the weather gets cooler, the weeds move nutrients to their roots which means the treatments you spray will be absorbed better and be more effective.
There are many factors that go into determining the cost of weed removal. Some of those factors are…
- The type of weeds your lawn is infected with.
- How large the weed infestation area is.
- How many treatments it takes to get rid of the weeds.
- The location you live in.
The best way to determine the cost of what it will take to get rid of the weeds in your yard is to contact a few reputable companies in your area to have a professional analysis done and receive a quote. If you live in the Twin Cities Metro area in MN, please reach out to us at Northern Roots to receive an analysis and quote! https://www.northern-roots.com/contact-us/
There is not one way to kill all weeds permanently. Depending on the type of weed, they need to be treated in different ways. From broadleaf weeds to grassy weeds to perennial versus annual weeds, they all need different herbicides and methods. The best thing to do is have a professional identify exactly what weed issue you have and then they can determine what the best method will be to destroy the weeds and prevent them from returning.
If you only have a few weeds, you can attempt to pull them by hand but you must ensure that the whole root system comes out with the weed for the best chances of it not returning.
